Trying to cheer up someone who is really depressed is an exercise in futility.
Don't tell someone who is depressed to snap out of it or to pull themselves together. Not only does that show ignorance about what being really depressed is, but it also implies that the depressed person has a weak will and will make him/her feel like a failure.
